Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work. At Sutton Valence we use the Kapow curriculum to support and map out our PSHE progression of skills. This Kapow scheme covers six core themes; Families and Relationships; Health and Wellbeing; Safety and the changing body; Citizenship; Economic wellbeing; and Identity (year 6 only). The spiral approach adopted allows different year groups to work on similar themes at the same time, building a spiral programme year on year, whilst offering flexibility in terms of medium term planning.
In addition to the weekly PSHE lessons, each class holds a weekly circle time. The weekly circle time is either around a school value, developing mindfulness or focused around a class specific area. All classes will have a display dedicated to PSHE linked to the current theme covered in lessons that term and the school value for that term.
Songs and actions will be used to support and engage pupils. Music can be used from Sing Up!, Out of the Ark Music and You Tube educational channels
Below is the curriculum overview for PSHE which outlines what is taught throughout year in each year group:
