COMPUTING
At Sutton Valence Primary School, the computing curriculum is delivered through the Teach Computing scheme, ensuring comprehensive and progressive coverage of key computing skills from Year R to Year 6. In Early Years and KS1, pupils explore technology through play-based activities, using devices such as Bee-Bots to develop early understanding of sequencing and direction. As pupils move through the school, they build on these foundations with increasing use of laptops and Chromebooks to support digital literacy, research, and creative projects. The curriculum includes a strong focus on programming and coding, where children use age-appropriate tools such as Scratch, Code.org, and Python to develop problem-solving, logical thinking, and debugging skills. Throughout all year groups, technology is used purposefully to enhance learning, promote e-safety, and prepare pupils to be confident, responsible, and capable digital citizens in an ever-evolving digital world.
At Sutton Valence Primary School, we take a proactive and consistent approach to Online Safety, ensuring that pupils develop the knowledge, understanding, and personal responsibility needed to stay safe and make positive choices as 21st-century digital citizens. Online Safety is not taught in isolation but is embedded throughout all computing units and reinforced whenever digital devices are used across the curriculum. It is also woven into PSHE discussions, helping children make connections between their online and offline behaviour, relationships, and wellbeing. Alongside this ongoing integration, the school holds focused Online Safety theme days each year, giving pupils the opportunity to explore key topics such as digital footprints, cyberbullying, privacy, and responsible online communication in greater depth. This approach ensures that Online Safety remains a continuous and meaningful part of every child’s learning journey, tailored to their age and growing independence, and supported by a culture of openness, reflection, and personal accountability.
