At Sutton Valence primary, Art and DT are valued and widely enjoyed subjects. We use the Access Art Split curriculum and the Kapow units for DT, alternating Art and DT each term.

Art

Implementation of Art

Art units cover three terms of the academic year and are taught weekly during those periods or taught in one block unit. Areas covered include drawing, sculpture and painting . Children will also study famous artists throughout history enabling children to enhance their learning and understanding of Art.

Impact of Art

Art work can be seen in sketch books and topic books but also through the corridors enhancing the learning environment.

These pieces are then used to create individual sketchbooks which are taken throughout the child’s primary school life to show development of skills and to emphasis their individuality and creativity.

Implementation of DT

DT units cover three terms of the academic year and are taught weekly during those periods or taught in one block unit. Areas covered include structures, food, textiles and mechanisms which are alternated and varied throughout Key Stage 1 and 2.

Impact

In an ever-increasing technological world, we ensure the children learn how to take risks, become resourceful, capable and innovative citizens, developing the expertise needed to perform and participate in everyday, technological tasks confidently and successfully. Through the design, make, evaluate cycle and research into existing products and key people, the children will develop a vital understanding of the impact on daily life and the importance of Design Technology in the wider world, enabling them to make future contributions to society.
