'Multiplication'
(Also known as:lots of,times, X, multiplied by, groups of, product)
Knowing the multiplication facts allows you to access many areas of maths more confidently and readily. At Sutton Valance we have made multiplication a real focus so children can not only instantly recall their times tables facts but use and apply them to many areas of maths including problem solving, fractions, division etc. It is also a huge focus nationally, with the Multiplication check happening in the summer term of Year 4 around the country, to ensure that pupils know all their times tables fluently by the end of the school year.
What multiplication facts should my child know and be able to apply to their daily maths lesson?
By the end of Year 2 - 2, 5 and 10
By the end of Year 3 - 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10
By the end of Year 4 - all multiplication facts to 12
Remember - just knowing the facts is not enough and your child needs to know how to use that knowledge to solve problems.
i.e. 4 x 5 = 20 then 20 ÷ 5 = 4
6 x ? = 42
3/5 of 30 = 18
If I buy 3 pencils for 9pence - how much will they cost altogether?
If I buy 7 rulers for 11 pence how much change will I get from £1?
Please practise the multiplication facts with your children at home. Being able to count in multiples e.g.. 3,6,9 etc. is great but they also need to be able to recall facts. 3 x 3 is 9, 7 x 3 is 21. The faster they can recall these the easier other areas of maths will become and the greater advantage they will have when the activity is timed!
Remember to use Times Table Rock Stars to practice!
