Phonics and Spelling:
Discrete phonics lessons are taught in Early Years and Key Stage 1, and discrete spelling lessons across Key Stage 2. Work is differentiated in all year groups and targeted support offered to all children. Some Year 3 children receive extra ‘Top Up’ sessions to support them with the transition between Phonics and Spellings.
The phonics programme we use here at Sutton Valence Primary is called 'Letters and Sounds'. Letters and Sounds is a resource published by the Department for Education and Skills. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven. We then follow this with the teaching of Spelling from the end of Year Two to Year Six. Teachers follow the ‘Progression for Spelling’ document produced by Kent to ensure appropriate coverage and consistency.
